Our Mission & Vision
To engage the mind, spirit, and body in wellness and community to enable older adults to thrive.
A non-profit resident-led senior (60+) “aging in place,” community in Humboldt County California, providing a continuum of services in a safe, secure and environmentally responsible setting that supports independence, socialization, personal growth, community involvement, and intellectual stimulation.
Humboldt Commons and Kendal: the Connection Started Decades Ago
More than 50 years ago, Life Plan Humboldt (LPH) Board President, Ann Lindsay, MD, toured a Kendal senior community and was inspired. “People were outside playing music, laughing and talking, everyone just seemed so happy. I really liked the Kendal approach to aging in community,” she said.
In 2020, as the drive to create Humboldt Commons began, LPH board members met to draw up the nonprofit’s values. After the initial draft, the values of other nonprofit life plan communities were reviewed to see if there were other concepts to include. The Kendal communities stood out for ethics that reflected the local culture and values of Humboldt County.
Now, years later, Lindsay and the Board are leading the effort to create this new option for senior living on the North Coast of California. Kendal has become an advisor and Humboldt Commons is a Kendal Affiliate in Development. Kendal and Humboldt Commons values are written a little differently, but the content comes from the same heartbeat.
