On Sept. 10, 2026, neighbors, future Humboldt Commons residents and local businesses gathered at Fieldbrook Winery for Life Plan Humboldt’s Raise the Roof celebration. With great music, good food and a lot of enthusiasm, the group celebrated the progress of Humboldt Commons, the new and first-of-its-kind nonprofit community for people 62 and older on the North Coast that will be built along Hiller Road in McKinleyville, California. Construction is planned to begin in 2027, and future residents have already started reserving specific cottages and apartments. In addition to celebrating the soon-to-be-new community and the launch of entrance fee deposits, the Sept. 10 event included optional sponsorships to help build a nearby sidewalk and bike trail. Attendees and sponsors together raised nearly $40,000 toward this effort. The new sidewalk and bike trail will also bring improved pedestrian and bicycle safety to Hiller Road for everyone who lives, walks and rides nearby. Note: Humboldt Commons already has funding plans in place and does not depend on fundraising. Future residents can enjoy every amenity as part of life in the community.
Dr. Ann Lindsay, board chair of Life Plan Humboldt, shared immense gratitude for all involved, “Life Plan Humboldt is grateful for the help. The McKinleyville community can look forward to improved pedestrian and bicycle safety on Hiller Road.”
